The filter is great. The steel containers are sturdy and the filter really does clean the water better than any other system I have used. But, I had a lot of problems with the rubber smell at first (like many other reviewers). The issue is the rubber stopper and washers they include with the system. The best thing to do is to throw them away and get silicone washers (just search online – impossible to find at hardware stores). I also just got 4 carbon filters instead of 2 (doing away with the need for the rubber stoppers) – more expensive but worth it (also it fills the tank much faster that way). I also got the stainless steel spigot from Berkey – well worth it (which comes with silicone washers). I really have no idea why they include these smelly rubber stoppers with the system! Priming the filters and cleaning the system is not a problem – there are several youtube videos on these. After the first month of trial and error, it has been perfect!

This didn't meet expectations. It was purchased for a newly-acquired family cabin along the Canadian border in northern MN for summer use by members of our family. Water to purify came from a crystal clear lake that carried a predictable risk from giardia and such. Purchased the unit with two “black Berkey” filters. Primed as instructed. Worked fine for a day, slow for a day, then barely a drip. Consulted the company (Mfgr customer service) and purchase/use of their “primer” was suggested as well as trimming this nearly new filter with a potato peeler. I did the primer, aided by a good UTube video on how to secure the parts together. Returning a few weeks later to the woods I fully primed with the new primer, which worked well. Late on the 3rd day it again slowed to less than a drip so I re-primed with no appreciable benefit. I am guessing the next thing is to disassemble and wash the black filters, then re-prime and enjoy for 2 or 3 days before repeating the process. SUMMARY: If you enjoy fiddling with something, this could work for you. If you want something for family use over more than a couple of days, you'll find it a big frustration. I have over $300 in this thing and am presently more likely to use one of my field purifiers I take canoe camping.

I heard such great thing about this water filter, so I bought one. I’m so sorry I wasted my $200+. First of all, the instructions were not helpful in assembling the filter, it seems like a non English speaker wrote the instructions and diagrams. So I finally turned to YouTube for instructions, and figured it out. Then, two days later, it wouldn’t filter any water. It just sat n the upper chamber, and didn’t drip through. So, according to the website I needed to clean the filters, which I did. It worked again for two days, and is now not filtering again. I’m just using city water, not river water, so I don’t understand why the filters need cleaning every two days. That’s a big waste of time and water, since I have to pour out all the water that’s just sitting in there to take it apart to clean it every other day. I totally regret this purchase! And I’m about to toss this horrible thing in the trash!

While the set up instructions were not great, we got this up and running pretty quickly. The first taste was fantastic and we loved it! However, after a few days, the water started to taste like rubber. We had the two black filters, and the small rubber plugs to plug the holes for additional filters. The way this is designed, the water to be filtered, does not fully drain out of the top, so there is always an inch of water in the top container. The water, which later mixes with water that will get filtered down to the bottom, soaks in these rubber plugs. It does not make sense to me that water you want to filter has to sit in something that leaves a HORRIBLE taste, even after it has gone through the filters. As suggested by Berkey customer service, we soaked the plugs in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes. Rinsed everything out. At first, we thought the problem was solved and the water tasted great again. But a few hours later, after it “sat” on the plugs, it smelled and tasted horrible once again. If they find something besides smelly rubber to block the holes, I might try this filter again. But I am trying to make my water better, NOT worse. If you are using all four filters, you won't have this problem. We don't have floride in our water, so we didn't need those filters. Note…. save your packaging for a few weeks….

We've had our Berkey for a few months. Our water tastes disgusting, as it is very very hard. Our jug filter did nothing for it, nor did the filter in the fridge dispenser. We though we were doomed to bottled water, but then we found this.

So please that it is not plastic, we are trying to phase out plastics in our home. It's shiny and looks lovely in our home.

It's a great size for our family of 5 and does not need refilling constantly.

And the water? Most importantly- the water is delicious! The Berkey changed our lives.

I ordered a Big Berkey filtration system and Amazon sent me the black filters that are from a recall. They are hazardous since the elements separate from the base.

I make my water every evening, then its all ready for morning. It puts my mind at ease, that I am now drinking the healthiest water possible.

We have very good water but I worry…. This takes the worry away. The extra black filters are extrodinarily expensive, over $50.00 each and you need 2 for my Berkey Travel however, they will last 3-4 years with the use I give them. The only other down side is it takes about 4-5 hours for a gallon to get through so you do have to plan and keep track. That being said, if you have even the slightest worry about your water, and you should, this is worth the effort.

Pros: Unit works as it should, is easy to maintain and with the sight glass it's easy to know the fill level in the bottom section. Cons: It has to be placed on a counter where there's a cabinet protruding above the unit, which leaves only a few inches over the top in order to refill and nearly impossible to know the fill level inside the top without guessing.

Conclusion

This Berkey water is great! I find it quite easy to fit into my routine.
