What Contaminants the New Wave Reduces
Are you ready for this? I hope so because the contaminant list is pretty endless.
- Chlorine and chlorine compounds. The latter of these is also referred to as THM which stands for trihalomethanes (just in case you come across it and don’t have any idea what it means).
- Odors that are caused by pesticides, herbicides, hydrogen sulfide and PCB’s which are manmade chlorinated hydrocarbons. The less you know about these the better in my opinion.
- Toxic heavy metals like organic arsenic, asbestos, cadmium and lead.
- Micro-organisms don’t get through this filter either, and the end result in your glass will be free from giardia and cryptosporidium along with numerous other nasty organic contaminants that can be a danger to your health.
What It Will Leave Behind
Contrary to popular belief, and I have found this out after many months of research, there are certain elements in drinking water that can be beneficial to your health. I used the New Wave Enviro 10 Stage Water Filter System for ten years trying to take care of my health and that of my family. In May of last year I learned about water filter certification and since it was time to replace the filter, I contacted the company for their certification data. As you can see from the email exchange posted below, New Wave Enviro refuses to share the test results even though they say their filter is certified. Given that the company refuses to share the test results, I conclude that they have something hide. Not being able to trust that my family is being served well by the use of their filter, I changed to a filtration system that is NSF certified AND publishes their performance data sheet.
I've been using your 10-stage filter for several years now. I'm concerned now that you don't have a complete performance data list including metals e.g. lead, mercury etc. certified by an independent lab. I couldn't find this info on your website. Do you have this kind of certification?
Please let me know. My filter is due to be replaced and I would love to get another of your filters but couldn't do so without proper performance certification.

This is not something we generally give in details. All testing is done through Barrier here in the US. The 10 Stage removes everything but fluoride at this time. We also have been certified through an independent lab. We do not give out testing results.

It's only okay imo because the company purposely doesn't mention whether it reduces chloramines in the description, in the directions, nor on their website where there make a huge deal about chlorine. I found that odd but there was a nice piece of paper included in the package urging me not to return it but rather to contact them with any questions or concerns I might have. So I called them and got a message machine. I left my name and number, but apparently they don't return their calls. So I wrote a friendly email to them using the address they provide – no reply to my email either. So now I'm just frustrated. I guess I'll have to have my water tested before and after filtration. Great. Just what I wanted to do this summer.
EDIT: I'm upgrading my rating to 4 stars, as I'm less frustrated, and it really holds up well especially after I figured how to keep the diverter working like new. I had used it nearly a year cleaning muni water in California that has a lot of dissolved calcium, and the diverter system got some hard water buildup that made it difficult to pull out and slow to shut off. I found that a drop or two of food grade (butcher block) mineral oil on the lever worked it's way inside and restored it like new condition! Please be safe and only use food grade oil. It's sold here on Amazon.
As far as the chloramines or any contaminants go, the best thing that can be done here is to flow the water as slowly as possible through the filter.

Check the filter before you install!!!! The first one I ordered the filter looked like it went through hell and back. I sent in and got a replacement that had a broken end piece that attaches to the faucet. This company needs better quality assurance. If I didn't inspect the filter I could have been using this without noticing which is pretty scary. I wouldn't trust anything this company sells after seeing the quality of this product.
Conclusion
Overall, if you’re looking for a water filtration system that works effectively (and can prove it); in my opinion this is well worth the money. In fact, I think it’s really well priced.
