Elders’ Sharing Circle

fiom-elders-circle-02All ages are welcome to join our MONTHLY CIRCLE: As we consider the impact on the Seventh Generation. This is our way to honor Mother Earth, and spread our culture to our youth and extended community through our traditional food ways and gardening. It is a time for the Elders to share traditional wisdom, which transcends tribal politics and brings everyone together. We celebrate Elders cultural knowledge through their stories, songs and sharing of their recipes.

The goal of the Elders’ Sharing Circle is to create a space to transmit traditional knowledge regarding the many uses of Native plants (edibles, dyes, medicines, ceremonial materials, building materials, hunting materials, and tools materials) to community members. The objectives of the circle are to hold monthly meetings. Each meeting will strive to have 20 participants in attendance, one topic to discuss, at least one topic-related knowledge holder, one hand-out to be shared with participants, and a recording with the consent of the knowledge holder(s).

  • Topics have been covered including: maple sugaring, wild onions, Native violets, wild strawberries, growing blueberries, indigenous basketry, herbal teas and Square Foot Gardening

Maple Sugaring Gabels Feb2015

What happens when an entire culture loses the memories of its Elders? What happens when those memories include traditional ways of making and preserving everything that the culture uses? The goal of the Elders’ Sharing Circle, sponsored by Food Is Our Medicine, is to prevent just that. Young and old alike will find the monthly meetings informative, a time to spend in good company, and most of all, fun!

The Elders’ Sharing Circle is the third Monday of every month. The dates for 2015 are as follows:

January 19
February 16
March 16
April 20
May 18
June 22
July 20
August 17
September 21
October 19
November 16

The event starts at 5 pm with a potluck dinner followed by the Elders’ Sharing Circle at 6 pm. This is a family event—all ages are welcome! A donation is appreciated. For more information please contact Sue at 716-532-5777 ext. 5512.
