Bananas produce a specific type of chlorophyll-derived linear tetrapyrrole that fluoresces blue. This is why a ripening banana peel glows under a blacklight.

Chlorophyll and heme (the core of the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin protein in red blood cells) are synthesized from the same precursor molecule. The structural similarity between plant blood and human blood is striking.

Never tap the same tree two years in a row. Give it a rest season to recover its energy.

Filter your collected sap through a cheesecloth before drinking. It often contains small bits of bark or insects.

Who Should Skip These Trending Functional Beverages?

Even if you have never reacted to birch pollen, start with a single ounce of sap to test your tolerance. Tree sap is potent, and allergic reactions can escalate quickly.

Chlorophyll water can stain your teeth green if you swish it around. Drink it through a straw and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward.

The green pigment binds to plaque and enamel easily. While it is harmless, it is not a look you want to walk around with.

If you have a sulfur sensitivity, be cautious with high doses of spirulina or chlorella added to your water. They contain sulfur-bearing amino acids that can cause bloating in sensitive individuals.

I got this wrong for months myself, adding too much chlorella to my morning smoothie and wondering why my stomach cramped. Cutting the dose in half fixed the problem immediately.

Birch water can also cause mild digestive upset if you drink too much at once due to the natural xylitol content. Xylitol is a known osmotic laxative in high doses.
